Brickman Mourns Passing Of Chicago Veteran Dave Rouley
In Memory of a Brickman Veteran: Dave Rouley

Dave Rouley came to work for Brickman in the early 60ís and soon became an invaluable part of building a company and a culture that has endured and flourished to this day. He was hired as a construction Foreman, but you might as well have called his position Construction Visionary. Dave didnít only plant trees; he was literally responsible for ensuring the designerís vision was transferred from the drawing board into real life, helping the Company to realize the landscapes of high profile properties such as McDonaldís Plaza (Headquarters), Volkswagen Headquarters, Oakbrook Club and the Colonnades.

ìWe joke that back in the day, my father and Bruce Hunt would quibble about moving a tree a couple of inches this way or that to get the design perfect,î said Scott Brickman. ìWell, Dave was the guy who moved the tree until everyone was satisfied, and he did it with a smile on his face and a willingness of spirit that was infectious. Dave contributed to what has become our company culture of ëdo whatever it takesí to get the job done right.î

ìHe was always someone you could count on when a really tough job was on line. He did some of the biggest Design/Build projects over the years and always came through when we had an impossible deadline to meet,î recalls VP Bruce Hunt.

But in his 30 year career, Dave ensured much more than job quality. He was a mentor and friend to many young people who have become Brickmanís current leadership. He would take the fledglings under his wing and teach them not only what they needed to know about installing a landscape design, but also those indefinable qualities that contribute to the growth of personal character.

Since the sad news of Daveís passing has circulated through the company, many Brickman veterans have offered their sentiments about his influence on them and on the company. Those sentiments are perhaps best summed up in the words of Gary West, of Chicago Specialty Services.

ìIn the 43 years I have been landscaping nobody ever taught me as much as Dave. He was a constant inspiration and had a way of projecting himself that made you want to learn. He would make you see the little things that needed adjustment and taught me how to look at a design, visualize the project and then install it. Dave was a landscape artist, with a deep love for the works he created.

In memory of Daveís devotion to Brickman and its employees, Brickman has established a Dave Rouley Memorial Fund which will be administered through the Theodore Brickman Foundation in Daveís name. Family and friends wishing to donate are encouraged to direct their funds through the Rouley Memorial Fund toward the companyís Haiti Relief efforts to take advantage of the current $2 for $1 match by the Brickman family.
