Victor Alonso
Chicago, IL

As another chilly morning set in around Chicagoland, Brickman crews were out in full force working to clear the snow that paralyzed the city last week. After 3 non-stop days of snow removal and bed still a distant thought, long-time employee Victor Alonso continued to clean the lots at a Wicker Park apartment complex. Suddenly hearing a faint, shaky voice Victor stopped and looked around. Following the sounds he realized it was a cry for help from a resident of the senior housing facility who was trapped under his car.

Upon returning from the store, the elderly resident had slipped beside his car and both legs flew under, locking him in place between the car and a mound of snow. Seeing this, Victor immediately began rescuing the man, who had been trapped for some time while only wearing jeans and a light jacket. Victor pulled the man out from under the car and assisted him into the building. After making sure the resident was alright, Victor returned to the car and carried in the man’s groceries.

“I thought this was an amazing testament to ‘serving the customer’ and going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Chicago Account Manager, Adam Woodcock. “Victor feels as though it was ‘no big deal’, but I think this is awesome!”

“It was below 10 degrees outside that morning and the man had been under his car for more than an hour,” continued Adam. “I’m afraid to think of the outcome had Victor not stopped to listen and react so quickly.”

Our thanks go out to Victor, whose actions remind us that, while we are on our clients sites, there is a lot going on there besides just landscaping. Taking a moment, even at the busiest of times, to be aware of your surroundings and to tune into the life happening on the site may not always save a life, but definitely can make an impact on the lives of the residents and tenants whose environment we tend.
